Smart homes are a bit contentious. Some people feel it is an invasion of privacy. Some that it is the grandest of conveniences. The reality is something in the middle but with a speaker only smart speaker, there are some interesting benefits that are worth thinking about for your home:
- Communication: You are downstairs and you want to call everyone for dinner – just announce it on the speaker. You are away from the home and need to contact someone you know is home but isn’t picking up their phone (or doesn’t have one) – drop in on the speaker. You are waiting outside for someone in the car and are tempted to honk the horn – announce from your phone in the car.
- Music: You want your kids/family to enjoy music – these speakers sound good enough for most casual listeners.
- Smart home: Turning off lights or other smart home features are useful to be able to do quickly before leaving.
- Searching: An accessible way for kids to search for answers to their questions that is audited (I can see their questions) and relatively safe (no media – text to voice responses only).
- Emergency: For young kids who shouldn’t have a phone, having some emergency contacts in the Alexa phonebook is useful for them to be able to contact some people via phone if they needed to.
